Moving on through my “Wine Tasting Walkabout,” I can across a series of tables, filled with 3 wineries that I knew (one I had written about in a previous “Wine of the Week”). Three of them started by the illustrious team of Rajat Parr and Sashi Moorman; Evening Land from Oregon, Domaine de la Cote and Sandhi Wines from Santa Barbara. It was the newest wine to this particular distributor portfolio that intrigued me the most; Piedrasassi, a project of Sashi Moorman. Why the intrigue? The focus of Piedrasassi's wine program is cool-climate Syrah, a grape of which I am a huge fan.
On this occasion they had their 2017 “PS” Syrah from Santa Barbara and three more vineyard specific offerings; from Santa Maria Valley, Santa Rita Hills and Arroyo Grande all from 2016. The wines being a favorite of Antonio Galloni from Vinous Media rating the vineyard specific wines 94, 91+ and 94 for the wines respectfully. As is usually the case, and given that they were all excellent, I did have my favorite. The Santa Maria Valley was a notch above the rest. Being 100% Bien Nacido Vineyard Syrah, this wine excelled. Vivid rich dark fruit with a long finish appealing to anyone who loves Syrah or bigger styled wines with a luxuriousness that can only be savored. Stay on the lookout for these wines!
There was so much more that I could put down in words, but for now, I need to commit to memory all the other wines and discussions I had that day and look forward to my next “Wine Tasting Tell All.”
Que Sera Sera.
