So a couple of weeks ago I told you just how excited I was to get back into wine tasting again after being off for almost two months. After having done three in a matter of only eight days, I’m reminded of the saying “Be Careful What You Wish For!”
In all three tastings, and what is usually a slower time, not only for tastings but for attendance, I have been slammed! Multitudes of people have been flocking to these tastings and what’s more, doing a, how shall I say this tactfully, drinking a bunch (I’m trying to be nice here).
No kidding! After my first Saturday tasting, I thought it only that as it was a sparkling tasting and Valentine’s Day was fast approaching, that maybe folks saw the need to pick up their favorite bubbly to help celebrate. I poured more wine that day then I had in almost ANY tasting I have done in recent years!
So I head out for my second tasting the following Friday. This was a little different. A grocery store was having a special food and wine celebration for their customers. Great idea and the way that the wine and food prepared was paired really set this event apart. Nothing outrageous mind you, appetizer size food items and a little better than average wine pour. Having done tastings at this particular store, one of those “try my wines” kind of thing, I was reluctant to think that I would be pouring even a bottle for the evening. Once again, I was, oh and how I hate to say this, wrong! Don’t want to give the total, let's just say that it was significantly more than I could have imagined. Now I’m getting perplexed.
Next day I’m pouring at a wine shop/wine bar/restaurant High-End tasting. Once I received my line-up and caught my breath at how wonderful were the wines I was to pour, I couldn’t wait to get there and dazzle the crowd with my knowledge and selection of wines. In talking to the wine rep I was left with two bottles to use for samples. Once again from previous tastings, I guessed that two bottles would not only be more than enough but I would have that second bottle left over. By now you can guess what happened, right? In just a little over two hours, I poured through not one of each bottle, but well into the second, and in a couple of the wines ran out. It was so busy I hardly had time to talk about the wines to those attending. Just picking up the bottles, pouring and a quick “this is from wherever.”
Now I like to be busy at tastings, but I like it when I have A LITTLE TIME to talk about them as well. I’m also gearing up for this coming Saturday as I have another tasting. While I want to hope that it is busy, I don’t want it so busy that I can’t regale folks with my knowledge and to expand their knowledge of the wines being poured. I can’t help but think that this Saturday may continue to be another slam dunk of tasters, leading me to continue to wonder “What are they putting in the water – or wine?”
