The Big Reveal!
A couple of days ago I talked about my visit with my daughter and how I bought a couple of “fancy pants” wines that I had duplicated from my cellar so she would be able to taste them and I would be able to drink those in my cellar when I returned home.
The Muga Prado Enea 2010 was my first wine to tell you about, here is the second:
Chappellet Signature Cabernet Sauvignon 2016
Founded in 1967 on the Eastern slopes of Napa Valley, Donn Chappellet focused on an area now called Pritchard Hill to produce his namesake wines. Focused on both Bordeaux styled wines as well as varietals that excel in this mountain terrain, they set about to make the extraordinary wines of quality and character. With the help of Winemaker Phillip Corallo-Titus, who has been guiding Chappellet’s winemaking program since 1990, the second generation of Chappellets has taken the lead in their quest for consistent quality and attention to both the vineyards and winemaking. Their Mother, Molly – Co-Founder and author, still walks the vineyards and continues her work for the winery. Her name also graces their Signature Chenin Blanc, which, up until recently, was only available through the winery. As I can attest, thanks to a Chappellet fan, I have been lucky enough to partake.
A blend of 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Petit Verdot, and 9% Malbec, the wine oozes (not a technical term but appropriate to me) dark berry fruit alongside flavors of mocha or bittersweet chocolate pulled together with nice, not overbearing, tannins. Softness lingers with you through the spice and slightly rustic finish that provides a lasting and satisfying finish.
Like the Muga, this wine too had its share of rave reviews, a couple of 96 Pointers and another in close step. From the quietness of both my daughter and me while drinking; I can only surmise that we enjoyed the wine so much that words had escaped us both.
It also should be no secret that Chappellet represents some of the best wines at prices that are below wines with similar pedigrees. With a well-rounded selection of wines, this is a winery to seek out and collect either for every day or to lay in wait in your cellar.
