Another year goes by and once again we look to the new year with many hopes and desires, or maybe just a question of what will the new year bring.
I like to think that I'm a fairly optimistic person. Sure, things happen that I can't stop, sort of that "tides and time wait for no man" kind of thing, but I like to think that progress continues, and mostly for our benefit.
With wine, I see the upcoming year as a time to have many new wines of various vintages become available. It's kind of interesting that as we move forward, I'm still looking back at previous years for the next great wine. Maybe that's what makes wine so interesting to an older person such as myself (mind you, I said older, not ancient). While it may be 2018, I'm working with wines that were created anywhere from 1 to as many as 10 years ago! Sort of my own time machine if you will. Interesting concept.
Another somewhat unique aspect of wine is all these new wines that will be presented, most certainly contain some most excellent gems that will be hard to resist. That's something I've always loved about wine. Miss something this year, chances are something will pop up in the future that will be just as good and maybe even better!
Least we do not forget something that occurs in almost every business out there. Innovation. Wine producers find new ways to grow, harvest, and make their wines. Think of some past innovations; concrete fermenters, screw caps, wood chips (that one is not a favorite of mine). Much more has occurred in the background that we never see, yet happen none the less. New, or almost forgotten, grape varieties find new life and are added to give us more to choose from.
So I say, "Welcome 2018, let's see what you have in store for us." Let's try and be kind though as to wrinkles and aches and pain! That part I can forgo.
Cheers and here's to a Blessed, Prosperous and Happy New Year to all!
