I've had some time now to really let it sink in about the Top 100 wines from Wine Spectator this year. I thought, maybe one more wine review from the list, but which one?
I do try and mix things up a bit as far as grapes, color and price. So setting off and putting my thinking cap on (it's actually an old baseball style cap from some mutual fund company), I consider all the possible alternatives. From my position, there are actually a number of ways to go here. Then it hits me! How about the least expensive?
I like this idea as it's not my usual direction to take with wine. I mean, if it's good and less expensive, GREAT. but that's hard to come by. Wine Spectator has taken care of that for me. A wine scoring 90 points or better and in this case on sale for the low low price of seven dollars and ninety-nine cents (I may need some longer copy so I spelled it out, for those numerically inclined, that's $7.99).
Matua Sauvignon Blanc Marlborough 2016
Of course, the fact that the wine just so happens to be a Sauvignon Blanc doesn't hurt either, one of my favorites. Coming in at Number 40 on the Top 100 was impressive as well. The wine is not hard to find and may even be in a number of restaurants as well. Off I go to pick up a bottle, chill it down and start tasting.
Some scallops for dinner and away I went with glass in hand to see for myself how good this wine might be. Overall, many New Zealand producers of Sauvignon Blanc have been getting better about toning down the grapefruit aspect of their wines. That's a good thing, and Matua is no exception. While still lingering in the background, there's more to the wine than just that. A little stone fruit and a slight hint of minerality really make for a lovely and vibrant wine. It went great with the scallops as well, even though I had some mushroom risotto underneath (Most of the time I would have opted for a light red).
While you can never count out the possibility of throwing in another Top 100 wine in the future, I hope to be looking forward rather than back. In the meantime, get yourself some of this delish wine and enjoy.
