Here it is, Sunday, February 7th, 2016, but more importantly, SuperBowl Sunday! You'd think with all the advertising and such, it would be some major event in human history. Don't get me wrong, I'm kinda into it this year as the Denver Broncos are playing, and as my daughter lives in Colorado and is a BIG fan of the Broncos, I'm sort of obligated to hope they wine, oops, I mean win...
Great way to segue into my blog eh?? Holding the SuperBowl in Northern California, it was inevitable that wine would actually be included into what is generally a beer oriented event. I saw where they were setting up booths for wine, having special promotions prior to the event centered around wine. All good, and as someone in the business, it can't hurt.
Here's my dilemma. I'm going to a Superbowl party where everyone knows I'm in the wine biz. BUT, I really want to bring, dare I say it, beer. Oh the inhumanity of it all...okay a little much. But you get the point. On top of that, we are suppose to bring a side. They told me that I could bring a dessert instead. Now I must have spent the better part of a half hour thinking about what to bring, but I hit upon the perfect, at least for me, item. Tiramisu!
Again, I'm not sure what Tiramisu has to do with football, but for me, surprisingly, it was very easy to make. 30 minutes max and I was done. I'm sure the addition of 12 year old Rum had a little to do with my decision. Oh, and the chocolate shavings seemed to figuratively and literally, top if off. I wish I could try it before I bring it to make sure it's good, but it wouldn't be the first time I've used friends and family as guinea pigs for my creations.
Now all this is interesting, well at least for me, and you, if you get a kick out of reading the rantings of this writer. But how do we return to the wine thing as this is a blog about wine? Easy, I still have to bring a wine to the party as it's pretty much expected. I also know that there are some very knowledgeable wine aficionados that will be there and I can't, or don't want to, disappoint.
Now I have a pretty good cellar full of very good to great wine. I know too, that I love to bring wines that are not the usual. Cabernet, done that. Merlot, not quite up to what I'm looking for. Cab Franc (from my previous blog) - great idea but most not ready to drink yet. I thought about Champagne for when Denver wins, forgive me daughter, but I'm not convinced that's going to happen. Now it hits me. How about a wine that has a little of just about everything in it? Perfect.
With 22 different varietals, mostly consisting of Zinfandel and Carignane, the 2013 Bedrock Heritage sounds perfect. Zinfandel to stand up to the likes of chicken wings and chili and the rest to go with anything else that might come up. I should point out that this is NOT the wine I would drink with my Tiramisu. For the wineaux's (that's pronounced wine ohs) of the group, with ratings like 93 - 95 from Wine Advocate and 94+ from Vinous Media, it should do well with that group as well.
All my problems are now solved. I can rest easy and just enjoy the day. Oh wait, I have to go grocery shopping, do laundry and clean up the mess I made making the Tiramisu. I guess it is really is "Just One of Those Days!"
It's now Monday and I have to apologize to my daughter for ever doubting that Denver would win the SuperBowl....
